Window Safety

Spring finally feels like it is starting, and now it's too hot in the house! How can we ensure our cats are safe?

Window's can pose a huge danger to our cats and their safety.

Cat's can very easily end up falling or ending up on the other side of an open window. This can be due to them being:

  • Natural hunters - a passing bird or insect can very easily trigger a cat's hunting instinct

  • Curious - cat's love exploring new places

  • Startled or scared - by loud noises, quick or sudden changes/movements

  • Warm or hot - they might be just enjoying the fresh air like us!

If we have indoor cats, an open window can mean that they are able to escape, end up lost, and potentially injured from being physically in danger outside of the house (on busy streets and roads). This is another reason microchipping is so important (and now a legal requirement) regardless of whether your cat is indoor or outdoor.

Cats do not always land on their feet.

Despite what we often hear. Cats often land on their feet, but this does not happen every time. An open window is a huge danger risk due to cats due to potentially falling out windows and injuring themselves. Always make sure your cat is protected from heights and falling. If this was to ever occur, get them seen to by a vet.

Hot weather can be difficult as we often want to open windows. Here are a few recommendations that help let air flow whilst keeping your cat safe:

  • Secure Windows: Install cat-proof screens, mesh or locks.

  • Supervised Access: Make sure you're always on standby and monitoring your cat/s - even if you're using cat-proof screens, mesh or locks!

However - the only safe window around a cat, is a locked one.
